A small bit of the Battle of Trafalgar. On left is Témeraire engaged in a point-blank duel with Redoubtable. Victory appears on the right.

Having made a new avatar I thought I'd stick with pixels and try a whole ship. Then two more.

I have once seen a scene quite similar to this, by whom I don't know. In any case I had no visual references before me during this whole drawing, with the single exception of a picture of Victory's head timbers. I might as well at least get those right.

15 Oct 2007 Somewhere between leaving the UK and arriving in Australia I got a DD, which means I also got a few hundred faves. I'll never be able to answer all of the messages, I'm just too far behind. But if you were one of them, thanks very much.

First-rate Sandwich by *squaresailor This is a truly remarkable and detailed piece of PixelArt created virtually without any reference. Wonderful sea and sky Pixel work to compliment these magnificent vessels. Please press the download button for the full view. (Suggested by ~thebdawg and Featured by `ShoneGold)

There's an excellent painting by Stanfield that this is similar to a part of. Poor Redoubtable really got hammered -- it's hard to imagine a 3rd rate lasting so long in a 1st rate sandwich like that. 'Course, she did lose almost 500 of her crew, I think...

Nice pixel work!

It's crazy what you just wrote. I nearly called this 1st Rate Sandwich, but figured no-one would get it. Guess now I know better. I just looked up the Stanfield painting, but haven't seen that one before. I guess the print I saw was based on that, or ship's journals. I simply placed myself in relation to each ship. So for example, the viewer lies about 2 points off the starboard bow of Victory, etc. After that I just made it up.

Excuse my interruption but... first rate... sandwich.... Even I, a thirteen year old boy, gets that... you shoulda named this picture that, it's cleaver.

I would walk five hundred miles and I would walk five hundred more to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door.

Amazing work... you are so multi-talented! Never a dull moment in watching your work :)

"1st Rate Sandwich" would have been a good title. :D I think most people interested in ships (which I'm sure most of your watchers are) would get it.

Certainly there are several paintings of this general window of time in the battle, and I'm sure all the good ones are based off of records, as maritime artists tend to be very faithful to fact (unless they're named Turner, for example...). So they all should look pretty similar. Funnily, I think most all the ones I've seen are from off the Victory's bow, too -- I would think the stern quarter view would make a very nice image as well, but I've never seen the Redoubtable-Victory set-to from behind.

Thank you. Thanks for the :+fav:

Thanks very much. It certainly saw me through a dry spell inspiration-wise. Thanks for the fave.

I have a smallish picture in a book done from the sterns. Oddly enough it's just lots of smoke and destroyed rigging, but with stern galleries.
