Just when I thought I couldn't take any longer to draw one of these I found a way. Draw it like it's actually sailing. Boy, that adds some time to the project (as does moving house, planning a wedding, getting a new job, Christmas....)

This is based on a Rolla class brig of about 1807. The Royal Navy had dozens of these brigs or classes very similar. It's actually the same type of vessel that HMS Beagle was, before numerous refits changed her whole appearance.

The set of the sails is actually a test for a miniature shipbuilding project coming up. If I drew this ship like I normally would, the foremast stuns'ls would have obscured most of the bowsprit, and just look dead odd to boot.

Geez...you're so good. :omg:

Hitting Download took me to the full size image with all its great detail. The fabulous shading creates the look of sunlight on this incredibly well-drawn ship.

I don't spend much time on DA these days, and when I get here it's usually by accident, but I just had to drop in and comment on this amazing piece.
Even though I consider myself a fan of the navy in it's later, "shell versus plate" era, I must say I have a soft spot for the sloops of war of the Napoleonic era, and this is one of the best drawings on the subject I've seen in a long, long time.
A well deserved :+fav:.

Nope, I don't have a signature.

No really, I don't.

Seriously now, stop looking down here.

Thanks very much. I've lived on ships similar to this so my soft spot is very firmly here. I'm glad you like this. It's a slightly different style to my others and I'm very pleased with the result.

Thanks for the fave and for adding me to your friends list. Much appreciated.
